The National Medical Commission (NMC) has warned seven medical colleges that they may face a penalty of up to Rs 1 crore for not submitting details of stipends paid to MBBS interns and resident doctors on the NMC portal. The commission has asked the colleges to upload the required information to ensure transparency.
In a public notice, the commission said that some institutions have not yet uploaded the required stipend information on the NMC website, even after earlier instructions. Therefore, the regulatory body has asked all medical colleges to submit the data within the given time. If they fail to do so, they may face monetary penalties under the medical education regulations.
The NMC said that sharing stipend information is important to ensure transparency and to check whether medical trainees are receiving the payments they are entitled to during their training.

According to the notice, medical colleges must submit details of stipends paid to MBBS interns, junior residents, and senior residents. The information has to be submitted through the NMC online portal and should also be made public so that students and authorities can easily access it.
The commission said that sharing this information is part of efforts to improve monitoring of medical colleges and ensure they follow the rules for internship and residency training.
“A medical internship is a compulsory part of the MBBS programme. During this period, graduates must complete clinical training in hospitals before receiving their final registration, and interns are entitled to stipends as per the rules set by the concerned authorities,” the NMC said.
“Similarly, postgraduate medical students working as resident doctors also receive stipends while undergoing training in teaching hospitals attached to medical colleges,” the statement added.
The table below shows the list of medical colleges that have not submitted stipend details on the NMC portal.
